Posted on 05/09/2009 03:44 am by JulieI decided to do this blog on the topic of sunless tanning because tans have always fascinated me. Why? Because it is so difficult for me to tan into a lovely golden tan, even though I live in California only 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean.
I have white gleaming skin, and after 55 years of living with it, have resigned myself to living with the flash of white on my legs when I wear shorts, or the white gleam of my shoulders in a short sleeve shirt.
But wait, what’s this? I have found that when I decided to just toss all concerns out the window regarding my untanned, mealy looking pale skin, that I started to tan when I started to expose my skin. Not a dark nutty brown tan, but a light golden tan on my legs and shoulders. Glory be! When I stopped worrying about no tan, it took care of itself. Imagine that! It is a great gift of life that some things just seem to do that, take care of themselves that is.
When I stopped fretting about no tan and just exposed my skin naturally in the clothes that were appropriate for the current weather, my skin just naturally took on a light tan of it’s own and in some places there is even a light sprinkling of freckles that has developed. How cool is that?
About sunless tanning products. I have used them when was younger and lusting after that perfect tan. I did have a problem with the tanning lotion being darker on the palms of my hands after the application and also with streaks. The tan that resulted was also an orange color that I did not like. I was not happy with the results.
That was many, many years ago when the products first showed up on the market. I can’t even remember the brand name of the product that I used.
Now I know that if you take some baking soda and scrub down with it on the areas that you applied the tanning product that you can remove it if you are not happy with it. You can control how much you remove by the intensity of the pressure that you apply when you are scrubbing with the wash cloth at the trouble spot of the tanning product application.
So in my case, when I was younger, I could have used the baking soda on the palm of my hands to remove the excess tanning lotion by scrubbing with a wash cloth. I could have used the baking soda and wash cloth method to make the runs and streaks that I mistakenly created during application go away as well by delicately rubbing the trouble areas. I could have corrected my mistakes and had a nice orange tan if I had known then what I know now.
It is a good idea to prepare your skin for the tanning product. You should always use a good exfoliating product on your skin for no less than 3 days before using the tanning product for the best results.
Also, if you are a routine user of a tanning product, you will most likely have to try numerous sorts of sunless tanning products until you find just the right one for your skin tone and style.
Obviously, whether to use a sunless tanning product is a personal choice. I hope the information that I present here on this blog will help you with your tanning situation. The most important thing is to be healthy and safe with your tanning choices and avoid getting too much ultra-violet light either direct from the sun itself, or from a tanning bed or lamp. Stay cool and be healthy!
